Hook

The Detonator Rig was built to give anglers a purpose-designed way to fish 9mm and larger urchin-style baits.

Using a premium Mustad double hook, split-ring connection, swivel, and teardrop weight, the Detonator Rig keeps the hook positioned around the outside of the bait while allowing its tentacles to move freely. The compact design creates a controlled fall and gives anglers a versatile presentation for fishing around rock, grass, docks, brush, and open water.

Available in multiple hook sizes and weights, the Detonator Rig can be matched to the size of the bait, depth, cover, and desired fall rate.

Our 10mm and 20mm Sea Mines were developed to pair directly with the Detonator Rig. The 10mm Sea Mine is designed for the 2/0 Detonator Rig, while the larger 20mm Sea Mine is designed for the 4/0 Detonator Rig.

When the bait enters the strike zone, the mission is simple:

Pair it with the Detonator Rig and let it fall.

Rigging

See Video Below.

To rig the Detonator Rig, start by tying a 1/0 or larger straight-shank, round-bend Neko-style hook to your main line. Pierce the urchin-style bait with the hook and carefully thread the bait up the hook and onto the line.

Next, tie your fishing line to the Detonator Rig. Once the Detonator Rig is attached, slide the Sea Mine or other urchin-style bait back down the line and over the round bend in the hook until the bait is seated securely around the rig.

Retreive

The Detonator Rig can be fished with two primary retrieves depending on the depth of the fish and how aggressively they are feeding.

Slow Drag & Pop:
Allow the Detonator Rig to fall to the depth where the fish are holding. Begin with a slow, steady drag while mixing in occasional reel twitches or short “pop-pop” movements with the rod tip. After working the bait through the strike zone, let the rig fall to the bottom and come to rest before beginning the retrieve again. This creates a slower, more natural presentation that keeps the Sea Mine or other urchin-style bait in the strike zone longer.

Reaction Retrieve:
Let the bait fall to the desired depth, then make 2–3 sharp, fast upward jerks of the rod, pausing briefly between each movement. On the final jerk, immediately introduce slack into the line. This allows the Detonator Rig to shoot upward and away before falling back naturally, giving the Sea Mine or other urchin-style bait the appearance of suddenly fleeing from a nearby fish. This aggressive change of direction can be especially effective for triggering reaction strikes.

Rod/Reel/Line

10mm Sea Mine Setup:
The 10mm Sea Mine fishes best on a dropshot-style spinning rod in the 6'8" to 7'5" range with a Medium power and Extra-Fast tip. Pair it with 15 lb braid to an 8 lb fluorocarbon leader for sensitivity, control, and a natural finesse presentation.

20mm Sea Mine Setup:
For the 20mm Sea Mine, step up to a baitcasting setup. A Medium-Heavy rod with a Fast tip provides the power needed to work the larger bait and drive the hook home. Pair it with 15 lb fluorocarbon for the best combination of strength, sensitivity, and control.
